Lively music with lyrics that combine political humor, compassion, parody and social commentary will fill the Scarsdale Friends Meetinghouse on Saturday evening, June 9 at 7:00 p.m. when folk singer Tom Nielson, currently on a nationwide tour, will perform at the Quaker Meetinghouse, located at 133 Popham Road just west of Rte. 22, behind Scarsdale Village Hall. Neilson, a prize-winning folk festival performer, uniteshumor and audience participation with raucous music and savvy, often satirical, political lyrics. During his yearsof performing he has received many rave reviews; samples of his music can be heard on his website: Tom Neilson Born on a farm in upstate New York, Neilson began performing at the age of three. Neilson's philosophy is thatfolk music has the power to effect social and political change. A college student in the socially-conscious 1960's when he first heard Bob Dylan, he taught himself to play the guitarand made his first recording at age 20. In the tradition of TomLehrer, Neilson's musical themes, while serious, merged humor and irony to address the struggles people face in overcoming injustice, greed and violence. After graduate school Neilson began attending Quaker meeting, and he remains an active "Friend."Tickets for the June 9 event are $15.00 and include light refreshments. Although tickets will be available at the door, space is limited and it is recommended to order advance tickets by sending a self-addressed envelope to SFM-Neilson, c/o 113 Greenacres Avenue, White Plains, NY 10606.
